Let Go of Expectations

I knew starting a program of this stature at this stage of life would be a daunting venture. When I arrived at the School of the Art Institute I had some idea of how the process would go. I would bring work, finished and unfinished. I would bring as many of my art making tools as two suitcases could carry. I travel often, and like to travel light, so this was a difficult ask. I figured i would bring what i couldn't replace easily and buy what I needed in Chicago.

I was assigned a studio, without a door, without natural light, and without some of the features that I'm used to. Whatever, I'll paint in the streets if I have to. Luckily my dorm room has plenty of light and needs some wall art anyway. The distances that needed to be covered concerned me , from class to class, studio to workshop, while carrying supplies. Ive spent the last few years making things easier for myself. Supplies where i can reach them, limited walking distances, and lighter tools. Would I physically be able to manage this?

Then during orientation, while we were deciding on the terms that described our community agreement, I made an agrrement with myself. I would make an agreement, a mission statement, for my approach to these new challenging tasks. I would let go of expectations and look for the possibilities. Yes, we will be doing a more work than I usally do. Yes, it will be physically difficult( hello, an opportunity to get in better shape!) and yes, Im not sure how I will measure up. I do know that I will be looking for the possibilities that are here, for growth comes with risk. Let go of expectations and look for the possibilities.
